The solution in a nutshell

  • Why

Climate adaptation is not only about preventing flooding, but also ensuring sufficient water during increasingly longer periods of drought. After the success of the Waterstraat in The Green Village of the TU Delft, there is now also a Heat Square to test three innovations that were developed against drought and heat stress. To test & demonstrate the effect of the BlueBloqs technology to mitigate heat stress in urban areas, a new demo installation was built at Het Hitteplein.

  • What

The latest application of the BlueBloqs technology, the BlueBloqs Loop, is being tested at Het Hitteplein. Our R&D team has worked hard on the design of this new system, including iterations on the BlueBiofilter and development of the BlueHub. In this new configuration, the water is not stored in the deep subsurface, but directly below ground level and then made available for use. This makes the system easy to apply to any location and provides an accessible variant of our circular water system.

  • How

Dams are placed in the existing stormwater drainage ring that collects rainwater runoff from 1600 m2 of paved and roof surface within The Green Village Water is directed to a buffer retention tank of 10 m2. Collected rainwater is treated in 4 compact biofilter plots before being used to water an adjacent plot of plant testing bed and supplied to the NoNo house for toilet flushing.

Construction was completed in the summer of 2020 and was heralded with a festive opening. Currently, the full-scale test setup is being closely monitored in close collaboration with Delft University of Technology.

BlueBloqs is also great for education: our students were very eager to measure, model, and contribute in collaboration with FieldFactors to the improved design of this innovative water quality treatment & climate-adaptation technology.

Having a test pilot outside the back door in the Green Village allows us more control and to try new things we cannot immediately do with the full-scale systems. The Green Village Staff provides crucial practical and logistical support for technical issues related to our test pilot on TUD campus which allows our team to focus on development.
