The solution in a nutshell

  • Why

The district of Spangen in Rotterdam experienced problems during heavy rainfall events. At the same time, residents of Spangen had the ambition to improve the spatial quality of the neighbourhood by adding more green. The Stadium of Sparta was using 15.000 m3 of drinking water for irrigation of their sporting pitch.

  • What

An Urban Waterbuffer has been realised at the Sparta Soccer Stadium. Rainwater runoff from 40.000 m2 of paved surface is collected, treated and stored underground, preventing flooding in the district and making it available for reuse.

The BlueBiofilter treats the runoff from high concentrations of iron, PAHs and nutrients. Stored rainwater is used to irrigate the football pitch in the Sparta Stadium, creating a sustainable water supply for the soccer club.

  • How

A feasibility study was first executed in close collaboration with all partners to define technical feasibility and system requirements. In one year, a full technical design was executed, and subsequently built in 3 months. Being the first full-scale application of the BlueBloqs technology, the system has been extensively monitored since commissioning in July 2018. Currently, we provide the City of Rotterdam with insights into system performance through the H2Q Dashboard.

As a municipality, we are happy with the realization of BlueBloqs in our project. It is a good, beautiful and safe way to treat water and make it visible within a project.

Without a doubt, this has been one of my best projects, not only because is was the first implementation of our technology, but mostly because it was all worked out from idea to actual construction in a very short time.
