The solution in a nutshell
-
Why
The Municipality of Rotterdam is a frontrunner in underground water storage. Their aim is stop draining rainwater into the sewer by 2050, and to infiltrate the water into the (deep) subsoil. One of the locations where an underground water storage facility will be built is in the Robert Fruinstraat, where residents are highly motivated to cooperate and contribute ideas.
-
What
Placing a BlueBiofilter in front of the wells has several benefits: complying with regulations, protecting the wells from clogging and createing a freshwater supply at a depth of 20 meters below street level. The renovation of the street and the Urban Waterbuffer system was completed at the end of 2021 and the impact is currently being monitored and made transparent with the H2Q-Dashboard.
-
How
The rainwater that falls on the roof of the houses in the street is stored in the deep subsoil, instead of being drained into the sewer. The compact and robust BlueBiofilter, fitted with the patented rim, is centrally located in the street. Together with a hand pump, which children can operate to extract a small amount of water from this stock, they are working on raising awareness about climate-proof cities.
