The solution in a nutshell

  • Why

Sited at the iconic new Torre Caleido skyscraper development in Madrid, Caleido Park is a new public space destined to become a benchmark for innovation, sustainability and recreation among the green infrastructure in the city. Sustainable urban drainage solutions have been implemented as part of the climate adaptation strategy of the City of Madrid. Caleido Park is an expansive green space with a central water feature. Large volumes of water are needed to maintain the water quality of the architectural pond.

  • What

A BlueBloqs Loop system treats rainwater runoff from the green and paved surfaces and makes it available to supply the architectural pond, replacing the use of potable water. A closed-loop system where water is continuously circulated from the pond through the BlueBiofilter maintains water quality conditions in the pond. The pond serves as an ornamental element for the park and also as a retention pond to store rainwater.

  • How

Rainwater runoff from the park is collected through a network of drainage ditches that brings the water to an underground storage tank. From this buffer tank, the collected rainwater is fed to the BlueBiofilter, which is nicely integrated into the design of the pond. The BlueHub with all installations is located under the paved pedestrian area near the pond. When it rains, the water collected in the buffer follows through the BlueBiofilter. The rest of the time, the water of the pond is in continuous circulation through the biofilter.

This is the first application of the BlueBloqs technology in Spain and the first time that an urban water feature in the city of Madrid is filled with rainwater. I am very proud that our BlueBloqs technology is being deployed in such an iconic area in Madrid, and for the trust of the city and Espacio Caleido to go a step further in rainwater management.
